Longport, Margate or Ventnor? How the Three Towns Feel Different
Longport, Margate and Ventnor sit right next to one another on Absecon Island.
On a map, they can look like variations of the same place.
Spend some time in each one, though, and you start to notice that they have very different personalities.
If you’re considering this part of the Shore, the choice often comes down to how much activity you want around you and what you picture your everyday life looking like.
Longport: Quiet and Residential
Longport sits at the southern end of the island and generally feels the most residential of the three.
There’s less commercial activity, and much of the appeal is simply the setting — beach, bay and quieter streets.
If you want your Shore time to feel more private and relaxed, Longport may naturally stand out.
The tradeoff is that you’ll generally head into Margate or another nearby town for more restaurants, shops and activity.
Margate: More Going On
Margate has a stronger mix of residential neighborhoods and places to go.
Restaurants, shops and gathering spots are part of daily life here, particularly during summer.
You can still have a quiet residential street, but you’re generally closer to activity than you would be in Longport.
For buyers who want the beach lifestyle without feeling too removed from restaurants and things to do, Margate can strike a good balance.
And, of course, Lucy the Elephant gives the town a personality all its own.
Ventnor: A Different Kind of Neighborhood Feel
Ventnor has its own rhythm.
It feels more like a year-round community in many areas, with a mix of Shore homes, residential streets and local businesses.
Its location also puts you close to Margate in one direction and Atlantic City in the other.
For some buyers, that combination of beach access, neighborhood feel and convenience makes Ventnor especially appealing.

A bayfront home and a lagoon home can look surprisingly similar online, but they can feel completely different once you’re standing there. I always want buyers to look past the dock and the view and think about wind, boat traffic, access and how they’ll actually use the water.
Think About What You Want Within Reach
Do you want to walk to restaurants?
Would you rather have fewer people around you?
Are you thinking about using the property year-round?
How important is being close to other Shore towns?
Those questions can be more useful than simply comparing houses.
Three Towns, Three Different Ways to Be at the Shore
There isn’t a winner among Longport, Margate and Ventnor.
They simply offer different versions of life on Absecon Island.
Once you know whether you’re looking for quieter residential living, more activity or something in between, it becomes much easier to decide where to focus your search.
